So, recently I’ve been playing a whole lot of Genesis games lately, but wouldn’t you know it, there is a short in the power cord. Well, for now I will have to wait on my favoritest console. That’s okay though, because it made me want to start playing Contra again.

Just out of curiosity, you’ve all played Contra right? I mean, you should have heard about it in some fashion. Well, since I own Contra 4 which has the original NES title as an unlockable, I’ve decided to play it again. Now don’t get me wrong, Contra 4 is awesome, but there is just something to be said about the original.

Now to get to the header of this post! What is the Contra challenge you ask? The Contra challenge is to beat the original game without the “infamous,” Konami code. I have beaten the game with the code, as I’m sure most of you have. I do wonder however, how many people have actually completed the game cheat free.

Don’t worry, I’m not trying to guilt trip any of you that haven’t beaten the game cheat free, but I am curious. I have to say though, whether I can manage to pull it off or not, I’m having a blast! So far, I have managed to make it to level 4 consistently. My best run was making it to level 5 without dying. I’m rather proud of that one at the moment.

Now before anyone tries to flame me for saying this, I like the idea of Fat Princess. The idea of using a living breathing flag that can be stuffed tickles my funny-bone. The part that really frustrates me is the lack of togetherness when I venture online.

Again, I know what your about to say and hear me out. I play all my games without friends, simply because I have no one to play online with. But, In most online multi-player games, I still manage to find a way to enjoy myself online.

With Fat Princess, I just can’t seem to find the fun as quickly as I would like to. Online Multi-player games live and die by their thriving community and this is no exception. All in all, I really don’t hate the game. In fact when it works I’m quite fond of it. But with a lack of a headset and an online community that mostly wants to go their own way, I think I’ll pass on Fat Princess for a little while. Who knows, maybe in a short period of time this community will be really established and the cake won’t be a lie.

Update:

I decided to play a little more yesterday, just to see if things would get any better for me. I have to say, I had a few really fun matches yesterday. It still was only a couple, but maybe I was just getting unlucky with the matches before.

Sorry again for my lack of consistency. I will try and do better next time. With the addition of a new computer in my home, I think I pretty much have no excuse not to at least post one time a week.

Again, sorry for the inconsistency with my updates, i just really haven’t found my groove yet.

Batman Returns

Batman Returns is obviously based off the movie with the same name, and as you would guess, it follows the plot as well. What makes this game stand out and not fall in the same pit that many other movie games have? The answer is pretty damn simple. Batman Returns is a beat ‘em up at heart, but it also throws in a couple of platforming levels and even a driving level in there to change things up. As a beat em’ up, Batman Returns is extremely competent and absolutely a blast to play. I have never had so much fun beating the crap out of clowns! One of the things that really impressed me was the interaction with the background objects. For example, say Batman is near a shop, he can throw an enemy into the window thus shattering it. There are also other objects he can affect such as benches, signs, and fences. Does it really add anything to make the game ground breaking? No. Does it help make the game that much more awesome? Hell Yeah!

If I had to make one complaint about the game, it would definitely be the driving stage. Now don’t get me wrong, the idea of the caped crusader cruising around town in the Batmobile is awesome……. If it were fun. To be fair, the driving stage is not nearly as bad as the god awful one in The Adventures of Batman and Robin. Yuck!

All in all Batman Returns on SNES is an absolute must buy if your a fan of the Beat em’ up genre, or just a Batman fan.

I just wanted to take a moment and tell the very very few visitors how sorry I am for the slow updates. I am not really sure if I even have 1 frequent follower. (If I do, please leave a comment!) Anyways, I should be ramping up the blog posts at least a little better. I am trying to re-proof the few articles I have, as well as pretty up the joint with a few images. What would be great to hear though, is what you guys think of the blog? In you honest opinions, tell me how good or bad of a job I’m doing.

Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)

Fallout 3

One of the things that I really detested from Morrowind, which was the last and possibly first Bethesda game I’ve played, is the roll the dice combat and unlocking system. What I really mean by that is, when you go to trade blows with a baddie, no matter whether your blow physically connects or not, its randomly determined whether this strike inflicts damage or not. The same can be said for trying to unlock traps or casting spells. I just hated how often your character will die in combat because the dice wasn’t in there favor.

Thankfully, this has been addressed since then and Fallout is a great game.

While I can say that I have only slightly played the first Fallout, I don’t really feel like I’m missing out right now.

Super Mario World

As I have stated before, when I grew up I had a Genesis, so I missed out on allot of classic SNES games like Super Metroid and Super Mario World. I have heard allot of people express Super Mario World and Mario 3 as there favorite Mario games of all time, so now is my chance to play and spout out an opinion on the subject.

Just to clarify, I am playing Super Mario World on the Mario Allstars +Super Mario World cartridge. I absolutely love this game so far. The graphical upgrade from Mario 3 is huge and the levels are allot of fun to traverse. Its also cool that they decided to make you fight the Koopa kids instead of repeatedly taking on the king of kidnapping. I am currently at the 6th world and I think that I am going to go back and try at least a little of every Mario game that I have just to compare and contrast to see where I stand on the argument.

if your in the same boat as me and have never tried Mario World, its definately something you should consider.

Celebrity Deathmatch (PS1)

Ahhh……. Celebrity Deathmatch, a series that illuminated children everywhere, at least those that craved seeing there most hated celebrities being offed in morbid ways! The show had a 75 episode run from around 98-2002, and featured….. You guessed it! A wrestling ring in which celebrities entered, but only a few escaped. Every once in a while you would see Stone Cold or some person that wasn’t a celebrity per se, but who gives a damn when there freaking insides are coloring the squared circle. To be honest though, I think that the show had an ingenious premise, but I don’t know much I would really care to watch it now. It kinda spoke to me in the same way that Beavis and Butthead did. It was a funny joke, but at the end of the day it was the same joke being repeated over and over again.

The game on the other hand, is a bad joke that should be avoided at all cost. The game I am going to specifically be mentioning is the Playstation version. I would compare it to its higher res brethren, but thankfully, I don’t own them. Lets first start with the case shall we? Looking at the front cover shows that they obviously have seen the show before, so it must have some glimmer of grattitude to the series?

The immediate suck-it-tude becomes apparent when you see the character models. What the hell is this? I thought we were dealing with clay celebrities….. But apparently, that was a ruse, the characters don’t resemble the title screen or front cover of the game. Why on earth would anyone do this! Its like saying Nintendo is making a new realistic looking Zelda game and then gives us Wind Waker! Now don’t take that comment to be a knock on Link, Wind Waker might be my favorite Zelda thus far, but you get my point But enough about there poor graphical choice.

The game play just FLAT OUT SUCKS! It is pretty clear that the developers thought to themselves, “If we made a a wrestling game with celebrities, which wrestling games mechanics should we mimic or borrow elements from?” …..”Well there was those awesome N64 games like Revenge ot No Mercy, but screw that, remember those more realistic looking games by Acclaim?” In short this game plays similary to the terrible Acclaim games on the Playstation and the 64. The celebrities moves just don’t gel correctly, and the characters just never quite have any sense of finesse. I realize that celebrities don’t have the prowess of real wrestlers, but damn, help a brother out or something. If you don’t believe me, rent or borrow WWF Attitude and try to run around and get a feel for it. Go ahead I’ll sit here and wait……….. See what I mean, it borrows quite abit from that game. The sad thing is, this game came out well after the amazing wrestling games did. I recieved this game to free and I would have rather spent my time allowing beavers to knaw my arms off in the creation of a new bridge.

In summary take a bad wrestling game, make it worse, throw celebrities in as the cast, lose the clay like art style, completely miss the freaking point, and there you have Celebrity Deathmatch on the Playstation.

In short…………….. F THIS GAME!
